BLSA held its organizational meeting on November 9, 1961 at the Hunt Room of the Colony Motor Lodge with 104 members in attendance
The first meeting was held November 30, 1961 at the YWCA with 82 charter members. On December 14, 1961, Judge Ingram Beasley installed the first officers. On December 11, 1961, NALS, Inc. issued the charter to BLSA.

Since 1961, BLSA's mission has been to provide quality legal education to its members and to be a vital part of the local legal community it serves.

- BLSA holds a membership meeting each month (except for the months of August, October, and January) where members are provided one hour of continuing legal education in various areas of the law and issues affecting the legal community. The membership meetings are held on the third Thursday of the month at 6:00 p.m. at the Birmingham School of Law in downtown Birmingham.
